THE GOVERNMENT RECOGNIZES AND APPRECIATES THE VALUE OF INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE ON THE CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY OF NATURAL RESOURCES GOVERNANCE IN TANZANIA.

On 11th February 2023 at Lush Garden Arusha, Hon. Dr. Suleiman Jafo, the Minister of State, Office of the Vice President Union and Environment, launched a book on using indigenous knowledge in the conservation of the environment, water sources, and forests. The book was produced by one of the Tanzania Natural Resource Forum (TNRF) members, Media Aid for Indigenous and Pastoralists Community (MAIPAC), among the 13 partners with respective projects coordinated by the organization under Indigenous Community Conserved Areas Global Support Initiative (ICCAs –GSI).

The project is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) under the United Nations Development (UNDP) and the German Federal Ministry for the environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety.

TNRF is a national catalytic organization for indigenous Community partners and members who support the communities using indigenous knowledge in the conservation and sustainability of natural resources. Since 2007, TNRF has managed and supported over 36 ICCAs partners through UNDP ICCAS, strengthening the process to upscale and support communities who have invested their indigenous knowledge for decades in conservation and sustaining community-conserved areas and territory for life in Tanzania. Currently, the following projects that use indigenous knowledge are underway:

  • Environmental protection by using traditional knowledge –Media Aid for Indigenous and Pastoralists Community (MAIPAC).
  • Reforestation and conservation of Lendikinya forests to improve Environment, Ecosystem, and Community livelihood – Baraza la Wanawake wa Kifugaji Monduli (BAWAKIMO).
  • Enhancing land tenure security and grazing rights for sustainable pastoral livelihoods in Arumeru district- Women Development for Science and Technologies (WODSTA).
  • Construction of Charcoal dam at Nyantare village in Guta ward in Bunda district to supply water for livestock and drinking and domestic purposes – Mtendeni Environmental Strategy (MES).
  • Up calling Improved Pasture production in Monduli district- Community Research and Development Services (CORDS).
  • Kiteto Participatory Ecosystem Management – KINNAPA Development Programme (KINNAPA).
  • Secure tenure for Pastoral Communal Grazing Land and capacity building for land rights in Simanjiro district, Manyara -Pilot Light Development Organization (PILIDO).
  • Empowerment and Livelihood Promotion in Hadzabe Community- Afrinurture for Peoples Development (AFRIPEDO).
  • Securing Pastoralist Land through Certificates of Customary rights of occupancy in Longido district – Ujamaa Community Resources Team (UCRT).
  • Sustainable Forest Management to Secure Multiple Benefits in Essimingor and Selela Forest Conservation in Monduli – Maasai Pastoralists Development Organization (MPDO).
  • Developing a Sustainable Rangelands Management Plan and Establishing Pasture Farms for Enduimet Community Wildlife Management Area Society- Enduimet WMA.
  • Simanjiro Adaptation and Mitigation of the Impacts of Climate Change - Pastoralist Economic and Social Advancement (PESA).
